Message from the President
Investing in the health and wellness of children is an investment in our future. It changes families, strengthens schools and benefits communities. By teaching children to live healthier lifestyles, we are securing a brighter future of fewer detrimental behaviors and preventable diseases. This concept was at the heart of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma's (BCBSOK) 2011 community activities, guiding our giving, leading our volunteerism and focusing our partnerships.
Last year, BCBSOK launched Healthy Kids, Healthy Families, an initiative designed to reach children and their families by focusing on nutrition education, physical activity, disease prevention and management, and supporting safe environments.
One of our efforts in 2011 was looking for ways to expand the successful efforts of our Oklahoma Caring Vans, the flagship program of the Oklahoma Caring Foundation.
The focus also meant increasing our community health outreach efforts by engaging in awareness events such as the American Heart Association's Heart Walk, National Walk @ Lunch, American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb, the Bart and Nadia Health and Fitness Festival, and the Williams Route 66 Marathon presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma.
We doubled the investment grants award for the Champions of Health winners, which honor individuals and organizations making a difference in Oklahoma’s health.
Our investment of $1.6 million in charitable giving this year benefited programs that are changing the way we approach health for children and adults. This included grants to the Oklahoma State Medical Association and the OU Physicians (Bedlam) Community Health Based Clinics.
It is exhibited in our partnerships with the Oklahoma State Department of Health and the Oklahoma Health Improvement Plan, where we are helping to shape the future of Oklahoma public health initiatives and advocate on behalf of the most effective efforts.
I am proud to be a part of a company that not only focuses on customers and employees, but also looks beyond our own walls, reaching out to the greater community to share our knowledge and resources to benefit our state.
This commitment to public health continues to shape our everyday work. It pushes us to set high standards for ourselves and our providers, such as through our Preferred Laboratory program. It challenges us to find innovative ways to offer health care, such as through our medical home pilot program. It inspires us to embrace new methods of encouraging quality preventive care, such as our partnership on the Bridges to Excellence initiative, rewarding physicians who embrace more proactive preventive health measures. It pushes us to stay at the forefront of the issues that impact our customers today and in the future.
As you review this site, you will see our commitment, our giving and our outreach to improve Oklahoma’s health. All of these projects are examples of how BCBSOK is changing families and lives through health and wellness.
