Message from the President

At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, our connection to Texas communities is a natural extension of our legacy of caring and commitment to our customers. Continuing to forge community alliances is one of the most formidable tools Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) has used to demonstrate our commitment to helping build healthy communities over the last eight decades.

Now, the wellness of Texas communities is being challenged by a growing obesity rate among young children. It’s one of the biggest health challenges, with some of the most high-stakes consequences, we’ve faced yet. It is, however, a challenge we must take on and win.

Today, more than 61 percent of Texas adults and 40 percent of Texas children are overweight or obese. Despite these statistics, BCBSTX believes in the power of caring and the power of bringing people together to work toward a common goal. A recent program that demonstrates our focus on reducing childhood obesity is Healthy Kids, Healthy Families (HKHF). HKHF is a three-year initiative designed to improve the health status of at least 1 million children by focusing on four areas: nutrition education, promoting physical activity, preventing and managing disease, and supporting safe environments.

A HKHF grant was awarded to Immunize El Paso, which worked collaboratively with the Caring for Children Foundation (which operates the Care Van Program), providing 9,000 uninsured and underserved school children in El Paso with free flu mist immunizations.

As we focus on our commitment to help stem the rising tide of obesity and related chronic conditions, we must not forget other important issues that impact our state. For example, BCBSTX made a donation to two organizations at a very critical time this year — the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. Delivering much needed assistance to first responders as well as victims, the donations were used to support relief efforts, including water, meals, and supplies for firefighters and others impacted by the wild fires that swept through Texas during a hot, dry summer.

As you view this report, we believe you’ll see BCBSTX’s tradition of caring as we help Texas communities achieve a new American Dream — one that includes healthier children — both now and in the future.
